There is no egg in an egg cream
An egg cream is a fountain drink from New York, and the name is the confusing part. The classic glass is cold milk, seltzer, and chocolate syrup, stirred so the seltzer makes a foam head. There is no egg, and there is no cream. The name stuck anyway. Chocolate is the usual syrup. Vanilla shows up in some shops. The drink is mixed to order. It is not a bottled soda you can leave in a hot car and still enjoy.
That description is the general drink, the one people mean when they search the words. It is not a printed recipe from Brooklyn's Finest Pizza. Our menu lists Old Fashioned Brooklyn Egg Creams at $5.49 and does not publish the syrup, the milk, or the pour. If the exact build matters, ask the counter at (718) 815-7070. Do not treat this article as the kitchen's formula.
Why people still order one
An egg cream is the sweet drink that belongs next to a slice in a New York shop that kept the fountain. It is colder and sharper than a canned soda, and smaller in ambition than a milkshake. Kids order it because it tastes like chocolate milk with bubbles. Adults order it because it tastes like the counter they grew up with. Neither reason requires the drink to contain an egg.
At this shop it sits on the drinks page with an ice cream soda float, a Manhattan Special, Stewart's, soda, and coffee. The float is a different item: orange, root beer, or Coke with vanilla ice cream, priced by the size on the menu. Do not call the float an egg cream. The egg creams page is the short local version of this same drink.
How a decent one is built, in general
If you are making one at home, the usual order is syrup in the glass, then cold milk, then a hard pour of cold seltzer down the side so it foams, then a stir that leaves the head. Chocolate syrup is the common choice. Use real seltzer, not flat water. The glass should be cold. That is home advice. It is not a claim that our counter uses those steps or that brand of syrup.
A bad egg cream is warm milk and a splash of soda. A good one is cold and fizzy, with the syrup mixed through and a white head on top. Drink it immediately. It does not wait. None of that changes the $5.49 line on our menu, which is the price of the drink we sell, not a kit.
Ordering one here
Order at Order Online, which is order.brooklynsfinestsi.com, or call (718) 815-7070. On an iPhone or iPad, the app sends the same menu. The shop is at 1250 Hylan Boulevard, Staten Island, NY 10305. You can drink it in the dining room with a pie, or with a hero. Hours run until 10:00 PM, and until 10:30 PM on Friday and Saturday. Delivery inside 4 miles can include a drink. Checkout confirms the address. A fountain drink is happier if you are eating here.
We do not list a bar, so an egg cream is not a cocktail with a different name. It is the chocolate soda-fountain glass. If someone in the group wanted eggs, the breakfast wrap is bacon, egg, and cheese, and that is a food, described on the breakfast page. The drink and the wrap only share a word.
Read the name, then order the drink
Egg cream searches often land on candy-shop history and on arguments about Fox's U-Bet. We sell a drink. We are not writing that history as if we invented it. The useful facts are the ones on the menu: old fashioned Brooklyn egg creams, $5.49, next to the rest of a short drink list, at a pizzeria on Hylan Boulevard.
Come in thirsty, or add one to a pickup if you are drinking it soon. Ask if you need to know the syrup before you order for someone who avoids chocolate. The menu and the drinks page are the list. The glass is the point. The egg is not in it.
A pie and an egg cream is a complete counter order: something salty, then something cold and sweet. It is not a dessert menu with five cakes. Cannoli, zeppole, and a fried Oreo are the other sweets if the glass is not enough. None of them is an egg cream. If you are explaining the drink to a kid, say chocolate soda with milk and bubbles, and skip the egg joke until after they have tasted it. If you are explaining it to a guest who avoids dairy, this is the wrong glass. Ask for a soda instead. The shop will not turn the drink into a dairy-free version just because a blog post wished it would. Soda, water, and coffee are the simpler glasses. An egg cream is the one you order when you want the fountain drink, at $5.49, and you are fine with milk. Drink it there if you can.
