Eggplant, rolled

Eggplant rollatini

What the dish is, and the wheat-flour note on our menu you should not skip.

· Brooklyn's Finest

Rollatini is eggplant rolled around cheese

Eggplant rollatini is sliced eggplant, cooked until it bends, rolled around a cheese filling, and baked with sauce. The filling is usually ricotta, sometimes with mozzarella and herbs. The sauce is usually tomato. It is a baked dish, not a fried stick, though the slices are often floured or breaded before they are cooked. Parmigiana is the cousin that stacks the slices instead of rolling them. Same plant, different shape.

People also say involtini. In a lot of Italian-American shops the words point at the same plate. The filling and the breading are what change from kitchen to kitchen. Read the description instead of trusting the title alone.

What our menu prints

At Brooklyn's Finest Pizza, eggplant rollatini is $18.49. The description says slices of eggplant, dusted in wheat flour or lightly breaded, covered with ricotta and other cheeses and seasonings. Entrées are served with a salad or pasta. The wheat-flour line matters. This is not a gluten-free dish as written. If that is a medical issue, do not order it and hope. Call (718) 815-7070 before you come in. The kitchen handles wheat. A menu sentence is not a sealed room.

Eggplant parmigiana is the stacked version, $17.99, breaded eggplant with mozzarella and tomato sauce, served with pasta. The eggplant roll in the rolls section is different again: a dough roll with eggplant slices and parmesan, at $7.99. Three eggplant items, three shapes. Order the rollatini if you want the entrée.

A tray for a group

Eggplant rollatini catering is on the tray list. A half tray serves 6–9 people and a full tray serves 10–15. The catering description repeats the wheat-flour or lightly breaded line, with ricotta and other cheeses. Check the price in the cart or on the catering page. The catering special on the specials page includes eggplant rollatine as one of the entrée choices, spelled that way on the flyer. Order that bundle as printed if you want the whole special. Do not add a coupon, and do not assume the special is gluten-free. It is not.

A single plate at $18.49 is the dinner. The tray is the party. Count people before you pick a size.

Home notes, not our recipe

At home, salt the slices, pat them dry, flour or bread them if you like, brown them, then roll a spoon of ricotta inside and bake in tomato sauce with a little mozzarella on top. Salting pulls water out so the rolls are not soggy. Wheat flour in that path is the same gluten issue as our menu. Skip the flour only if you have a method you already trust, and do not call the result our dish.

We are not publishing bake times or a cheese ratio. The plate we sell is the one in the description. If you wanted that plate, order it instead of rebuilding it.

How to order

Order at Order Online, which is order.brooklynsfinestsi.com, or call (718) 815-7070. On an iPhone or iPad, the app sends the same menu. The shop is at 1250 Hylan Boulevard, Staten Island, NY 10305. Sit down, pick it up, or check delivery inside 4 miles. Hours end at 10:00 PM, or 10:30 PM on Friday and Saturday. Tell the shop salad or pasta for the entrée side.

Eggplant rollatini is the rolled entrée, with ricotta, and with wheat flour or breading in the description. Eggplant parm is the stack. The eggplant roll is the dough. Pick the right name. The menu lists all three. If gluten is the question, the phone call comes before the order, not after.

It is a full entrée, not a side of eggplant. One plate is dinner for one person. A tray is the version for a table that all wants the same thing. Pair it with a plain pie if half the table wants pizza and half wants the rollatini. Say so on one ticket instead of two separate orders that arrive apart. The cheese filling is ricotta and other cheeses, so it is not a dairy-free dish either. Read the description once before you send the link to a guest. The name sounds light. The plate is cheese, sauce, and eggplant, and the menu says wheat flour or breading. It is $18.49 before the side. A salad or pasta comes with the entrée, so say which one you want instead of leaving it blank. If the group is large, the catering tray uses the same description and the 6–9 or 10–15 portions. Check that price in the cart. A single plate will not feed the table, and a tray is too much for one person. Pick the size that matches the head count, and mention the wheat flour to anyone who asked for a gluten-free dinner. This is the wrong plate for that request unless the shop tells you otherwise on the phone. Order a different entrée if they say no. The phone number is on the location page, next to the hours and the map, so you can ask before you drive.
