Two folded pies

Calzone vs stromboli

How the two shapes differ, and which names are actually on our menu.

· Brooklyn's Finest

They start with the same dough and then split

Calzone vs stromboli is a counter argument that sounds picky until the wrong one shows up in the bag. Both are pizza dough wrapped around a filling. Both are richer than a slice. After that, the shape does the work. A calzone is usually a turnover: a round of dough folded in half and sealed, so you get one pocket. A stromboli is usually a log: the dough is rolled around the filling and often sliced into pieces you can share.

Shops argue about the fillings too. A New York calzone often has ricotta. A stromboli often has shredded mozzarella and cured meat, and less ricotta, so it slices cleanly. Those are habits, not a law. If you care about the shape, order by the shape. If you care about the filling, read the item name. Brooklyn's Finest Pizza prints both, and the printed versions are more specific than the argument.

What our calzones actually are

The menu section is called Our Famous Calzones, and the section note says they can be deep fried or baked. That is a choice to make when you order, not a guess. The cheese calzone is $8.99, made with ricotta and mozzarella. The ham calzone is $9.49, ricotta and mozzarella. The spinach calzone is $9.49, ricotta and mozzarella. The pepperoni calzone is $9.49, with pasta sauce and mozzarella. The spinach and pepperoni calzone is $9.99, with pasta sauce and mozzarella. The meatball calzone is $9.49, meatball, sauce, and cheese.

Those six are the list. We are not adding a chicken calzone or a steak calzone that the menu does not name. If you want it fried, say fried. If you want it baked, say baked. The menu is where the names live, and the cart is where the price lives if a number moves. A calzone is a meal for one hungry person, or a shared starter next to a pie.

What our stromboli actually is

The stromboli is not in the calzone section. It sits with Brooklyn's Finest Rolls, at $8.99, described as pizza crust filled with gooey melted cheese. That is the whole description. It does not say pepperoni, ham, or ricotta. Do not order the stromboli and expect the ham calzone. If you want pepperoni inside dough, the pepperoni roll is a different item, $7.99, stuffed with pepperoni and mozzarella. The sausage roll, meatball roll, and chicken roll are different again.

So the honest calzone vs stromboli answer at this shop is narrow. Calzones are the folded list above, baked or fried, several of them with ricotta. The stromboli is the cheese-filled crust in the rolls section. A roll and a stromboli overlap in people's heads because both get sliced. On our menu they have different names, and the names are the order.

How to choose tonight

Want ricotta and a pocket you can eat with a fork? Order a calzone, and pick the filling from the six names. Want melted cheese in a crust you might share by the piece? Order the stromboli. Want meat in a roll that is not called a stromboli? Order the pepperoni roll, the sausage roll, or the meatball roll by those names. The older chicken roll post covers the chicken versions if that is the filling.

Order at Order Online, which is order.brooklynsfinestsi.com, or call (718) 815-7070. On an iPhone or iPad, the app sends the same menu. The shop is at 1250 Hylan Boulevard, Staten Island, NY 10305. Hours run to 10:00 PM, or 10:30 PM on Friday and Saturday. Pickup is simple. Delivery is within 4 miles, and checkout confirms the address. A calzone and a stromboli can share a ticket with a pie if the table is split. They do not have to.

A few things this post will not decide

We will not settle which one is more Italian, or which one every other Staten Island shop puts on the board. Their menus are theirs. Ours is this list. We also will not print an oven temperature or a fry time. The menu says baked or fried for the calzones. It does not publish the method beyond that. Ask the counter if the texture matters to you.

Calzone vs stromboli is easier after you have ordered both from the same kitchen once. Come to 1250 Hylan Boulevard, or send the order online. Read the item before you pay. Cheese stromboli means cheese. A ham calzone means ham, ricotta, and mozzarella. The words on the screen are the food in the bag.

If you are feeding a car full of people, a calzone is a poor plan as the only item. Add a pie. The rolls section is built for sharing by the piece, and a cheese stromboli can sit next to a pepperoni roll without anyone pretending they are the same order. Say baked or fried out loud for the calzone. Leftovers reheat better in a hot oven than in a stack of napkins. And if someone needs a hero instead of dough wrapped around cheese, the hero list is on the same menu. The folded pie does not have to be the whole ticket.
